November License Plate Report

November 30, 2006

Nothin' to report. It's looking more and more as if 2006 will close with five no-shows: North Dakota, Nebraska, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Hawaii.

Joan's ponies left this morning. The truck pulling the stock trailer had Virginia plates; the trailer itself had Massachusetts. The truck pulling the flatbed trailer had Virginia plates, and so did the trailer. I was by yesterday to say "so long." Two of the carriages were already loaded on the flatbed and one was in the bed of the pickup. The (smaller) bed of my pickup is currently laden with smaller stuff that didn't go south: grooming supplies, a longe line, several buckets and storage containers. The ponies have homes lined up. The Virginia women will sell the carriages and harness; the market down south is considerably bigger than it is on Martha's Vineyard. My job is to find a home for the small stuff.

Farewell to Emmy, a 22-year-old pistol who when the gate is opened from paddock to pasture tears through like the competitive driving pony she is; to Sweeps, Emmy's lookalike daughter; and to Fanny, the 11-year-old Morgan mare. Farewell to the ad hoc team that came together over the last two and a half weeks to look after them. Some of us already knew each other pretty well; others were almost strangers. No matter how often we see each other in the coming months, we're bound together now, comrades in a campaign that's drawn to a close.
