Passed!
March 21, 2006
Uhura Mazda passed inspection this morning (my appointment was at 10:40, just in case I'm tempted to forget what else I'm supposed to be doing this time of year) and is now sporting a new blue-on-white sticker good till this time next year. As usual I was afraid she was gonna flunk. Yesterday afternoon en route to the Vineyard Haven post office I reached up to adjust the rearview mirror -- the dog who is my co-pilot frequently knocks it askew because he's too big for his seat -- and the damn thing came off in my hand. Woops. A few minutes' fumbling in the p.o. parking lot put it back in place and saved me a detour to Courtesy Motors (a stone's throw from the p.o.) to throw myself at Larry's feet and beg him to fix my mirror before tomorrow.
Then this morning, en route to the bank to deposit a check and withdraw the $29 inspection fee, I tested the horn. Not a peep. Test test test: nothing nothing nothing. Parked at bank, procured money, fended off woman I knew pretty well about 20 years ago who wanted to catch up the last 10 years on the spot. It was 10:34. I bolted. Heading down the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, I hit the horn again. Beep! Whew.
Pulled up in front of Dave Pothier's shop at 10:40 on the nose. Springer spaniel didn't want to let me into the waiting room; rather, he didn't want to let Rhodry into the waiting room. Employee appeared and ushered dog back to the repair bays. Rhodry snoozed, I skimmed Yankee Magazine, and pretty soon Uhura appeared outside the window. The envelope, please . . .
Passed. We're legit.
