Acorns

September 26, 2007

I can't remember ever being as aware of acorns as I've been in the last week. The weather's warm enough to keep the windows and the front door open, so I hear them pelting the deck whenever the wind gusts. The weather's also warm enough that I'm still running around barefoot and yeowing when I step on one. (I spend so much time in boots that my feet don't toughen up the way they did in my kidhood. Barnyards are a really lousy place to go barefoot. It's less the fear of tetanus that deters me than the unwillingness to risk getting stepped on by 1,200-pound animals wearing iron shoes -- or even Allie Punkster, who weighs closer to 950 and doesn't wear any shoes. Her barefoot beats my barefoot any day of the week.)

Rhodry's been sleeping on the deck, but at some point last night, probably after a direct hit by a flying acorn, he went downstairs and took shelter in the outdoor shower.
