On the Bus

May 25, 2006

The next few blogs were logged in my journal book on my trip to and from WisCon, and during (rare!) breathing spaces at the con itself. I guess they're properly jlogs or jblogs, but what the hell. Short version: It was great! Longer version: Read on!

On the bus from Woods Hole to Logan Airport:

I'm beyond the rough stuff, the breaking waves -- I'm on my way.

Saw Don my license plate buddy on the dock. He's going off for a follow-up to shoulder surgery. Said he's not sure he needed shoulder surgery, and in any case the physical therapists remind him of the Inquisition. Since he was a minister in a former life, I take him seriously. Brigit Tobin, the face of the Steamship Authority in Vineyard Haven, is assisting and/or training the ticket taker. She greets Don then does a double-take when she recognizes me: "You look great! I haven't seen you in ages."

Me: "That's because I never go off-island."

Brigit: "Good for you!"

I'm overjoyed that someone else sees it that way. Most people think I'm either geographically deprived or an agoraphobic in the making.

In Woods Hole, foot passengers disembarked from the freight deck. I spotted Delaware to portside and two seconds later noticed Don to starboard. "You have Delaware yet?" I called. He nodded. I pointed anyway.

Mailed IRS check from Woods Hole.

Bus driver took my bags and said, "What airline?"

Me: "Continental."

He stowed them in the appropriate compartment. I've never flown Continental before. Was relieved that he didn't roll his eyes and say, "Good luck."
