Bye, Molly I.

February 02, 2007

The great journalist Molly Ivins died on Wednesday. I heard when I logged on yesterday morning. Phil Ochs's song "When I'm Gone" was running through my head all day. Here's the last verse:

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

First I bawled whenever I read another tribute. I kept seeking out tributes so I could bawl some more. Just now I spent almost an hour browsing the Texas Observer website, where there are loads of tributes from all sorts of people, not to mention a selection of Molly columns. No more bawling -- now I'm just awed by how many people she inspired with her words. Journalists, activists, people doing all kinds of work in all kinds of places. She still cracks me up.

I need several reminders a day that writing can tell you what's what and make you laugh out loud at the same time. It isn't all mass-produced, niche-marketed "product." Molly really could say all that stuff because she did her homework and she told it true. True and funny.

Carry it on.
