Photo Shoot

May 12, 2006

My favorite island photographer, Betsy Corsiglia, called a few days ago: she was doing a photo essay about horsey activities on Martha's Vineyard and was I interested in being photographed? Without even consulting Allie, I volunteered to recruit a couple of friends for a trail ride shoot at the Mai Fane meadow. Ginny and Elaine were both up for it; however, the weather forecast all week has been relentlessly dire. Last I looked at Weather Underground, forecasts were posted through next Wednesday, and there were no smiley sunshine faces to be seen anywhere. Today was 60% chance of rain, but yesterday turned out considerably better than expected so we proceeded as if today would follow suit. We bet on the right horse, so to speak.

Ginny, Dolci, Allie, and I, with Rhodry leading the way, rendezvoused with Elaine and Howie, accompanied by Tillo and Sydney (who's been hanging out with Tillo while his people are away -- I'm looking after the horses), and headed off to Mai Fane. We arrived at one on the nose; Betsy had to replace a dying camera battery and was a bit late. The backside of the meadow, where a trail comes out of the woods and forks, leading uphill in two directions, proved an ideal location. Betsy held the high ground while three horses, three riders, and three dogs went up and down in one direction, then the other. Allie was fine when she got to lead; trouble was, when we turned around to try another take, this put her at the end and she'd throw a tantrum. The dogs were mannerly and terminally photogenic: imagine a German shepherd and a Malamutt in monochrome, accompanied by a Briard who looks like a four-legged kid decked out in blond gorilla pajamas with feet.

I picked paddocks, made up grain, helped Ginny replace the heavy rubber mats in the barn's main aisle, and generally procrastinated as long as I could because I knew the megadisaster would be waiting inside the door when I got home. Went to Our Market (beer) and Reliable (groceries), headed over to West Tisbury to feed my charges, and finally could delay no longer. Nothing exploded when I opened the box; still, it's a mess. Pages have been added, chapters rearranged. The good news is that it's only in residence until Monday, and the weather the next two days is supposed to be foul: 100% chance of rain. Which might mean I won't be tempted to be gallivanting off through the woods. I might even get the sucker done, if I don't fall asleep.
