January License Plate Report

January 31, 2009

The first and biggest month of the plate hunter's year is over. The count stands at 23. Here's the list, in order of appearance:

Massachusetts, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, D.C., Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Maryland, Utah, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, New Mexico, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, California, Oregon, and North Carolina.

All six New England states made the top 10 this year; last year Maine and Vermont were #12 and #15, respectively. Florida and Pennsylvania weren't in last year's top 10, but if I didn't spot them in January it would be because I spent the whole month hunkered down in the state forest somewhere. There are no exotics on the January 2009 list, but it's worth noting that in 2008 Wisconsin didn't appear till February, Illinois till March, North Carolina and Tennessee till April, and New Mexico till May.

That New Mexico probably deserves an asterisk: the van that sported it was back in the woods at a mostly unused campsite (aka family dump) and probably hasn't rolled down a paved road in a couple of years, but it was attached to a vehicle in the appropriate way, so I'm counting it. Tramping around the same campsite (in pursuit of Mr. Travvy, who loves foraging there), I noticed an old license plate nailed to a wall. Part of it was obscured, but the word "GARDEN" was visible. New Jersey, the Garden State? I wondered, but the color was wrong and GARDEN was on the right side of the plate. Only one other state that I know of has GARDEN on its plate -- could it be . . . ? It was: a plate from the Peace Garden State of North Dakota. Wow. No way could I count it: the year was 1962, the registration sticker said 1965, and the plate was attached to the wall of a shack. It's a treasure nonetheless, and maybe an omen for the unfolding year.
