Another Door Opens
February 26, 2006
Back in December when time came to leave the Island Community Chorus, I knew I still needed music in my life and I had two specific ideas in mind. One was buckling down and actually learning to play the guitar that I'd borrowed from a friend, what, almost two years ago? As related in previous blogs, notice of a 10-week free guitar course appeared in the paper, I signed up, and voilà, I am now a seven-chord wonder, albeit a very slow one.
The other idea was singing informally with other women -- inspired especially by the workshop I attended in Woods Hole several years ago, facilitated by Libana's Susan Robbins and Marytha Paffrath, but also by memories of the Wiccan celebrations I'd been part of in my D.C. days. I mentioned my interest to a couple of acquaintances, then along came the guitar course and it seemed my universe had put group singing on hold.
Hah. About three weeks ago I saw another notice in the paper: a singing workshop led by Roberta Kirn at the Unitarian church. On the appointed Saturday morning I was up to my vocal cords in other people's horses and an impending deadline and so, with regret, decided to skip it. A few days later one of the aforementioned acquaintances called. She'd been to the workshop, it was wonderful, there was talk of an ongoing group, was I interested?
When opportunity knocks twice, you better answer the door, girl!
We had an organizational meeting at the UU church yesterday afternoon. The group's going to be biweekly and it starts in two weeks: Saturday, March 11, 1:30 p.m. at the UU church. Naturally I volunteered to help with PR (is the pope Catholic, etc.).
P.S. FreeCell streak currently stands at 76.
