January License Plate Report

January 31, 2008

First license plate report of the new year is always the biggest, but this may be the smallest January tally since I started platewatching about 20 years ago: 21. Like I've said before, I don't get out much, and every year more of those out-of-staters are driving around camouflaged in Massachusetts plates. The spotted sighted states are now blue on my 2008 map. As usual, the color is spreading southward along the East Coast from New England, toward Florida (an early catch) at the bottom, and the West Coast is almost solid (Oregon's still AWOL). What's interesting is the activity in the heartland. Most years the color closes in from east and west, leaving a white stack in the middle of the country sitting on the hunchback of Texas. This year two of the five stack states are already blue, and it looks as if the Colorado-Utah tandem is trying to push Kansas into Missouri.

Here's the complete haul, in order of appearance. D.C. was early this year, mainly because it was parked in my driveway on New Year's Day.

Massachusetts, D.C., California, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Virginia, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, Maine, South Dakota, Washington, Vermont, Florida, Utah, Nebraska, Maryland, Texas, Pennsylvania.
