Off to Wisconsin

May 25, 2006

Rhodry, already suspicious of the two mostly packed suitcases in the other room, is now 100% certain that something's going on: I just made up six bagged lunches with his food and put them all in a shopping bag. He's lying in front of the refrigerator, putting on a pretty good impression of a put-upon not-a-morning-dog who ordinarily wouldn't be up this early.

Sheesh, traveling is a hassle. Will I need this, what if I forget that, am I really going to work on that, how much chance is there that I'll actually read that book? Mostly I like being on the road -- it's a border-crosser's natural milieu, and how often do I think about how many people are in transit, neither here nor there, at every moment of the average day? -- but getting there . . .

It's like taking off in a plane, that stupendous gathering of energies to beat the law of gravity. Which isn't, need I say, my favorite part of flying.

Well, I'm almost off. Elaine's giving me a ride to the boat (which is within walking distance, but two suitcases do slow a girl down) and then taking Rhodry home to hang out with Tillo. He's going to have a good time, but at the moment he's worried.
