Bargain
August 27, 2008
Yesterday my neighbor was driving in the road we live on while I was driving out. She rolled down her window and said she'd just seen a pair of riding pants I might be interested in: fleece-lined, size large, and on the rack at Martha's Closet, a consignment shop in the Tisbury Marketplace. The price on the tag was $30.
Way-hay, you betcha. I've got one great pair of winter schooling tights, aka "schoolers," that will probably outlast me, but at the end of last winter I trashed my other (cheap) pair: the stitching around the knee patches was fraying and breaking, and holes were appearing in strategic places. So I headed into Vineyard Haven, sneak-and-double-dared my way through Five Corners, and pulled into a parking place outside the shop -- only to discover a handwritten sign on the door: "BACK AT 4:20." It was 4:10, but I was overdue at the barn and who knew if the proprietor would return at 4:20 on the nose or more like 4:28, so I sneak-and-double-dared my way into the line of traffic crawling down the Beach Road and went to the barn.
Ordinarily I won't cross the street for a bargain, though I do print out yeast coupons and order my contact lens solution from Walgreens because the island price is ridiculous, but the possibility of obtaining a pair of good-quality winter schoolers for $30 was well worth the inconvenience, so this afternoon I made my way back to town. The traffic hadn't improved, but the shop was open and after searching all the racks with pants on them, I found the black schooling tights, size large, $30. They looked good, the maker was reputable; I tried them on; they fit!
I took them to the counter and handed over two $20 bills. The proprietor handed one of them back and explained that the gray tag indicated that the price was half off: $15 instead of $30.
A good, nearly new pair of winter schoolers for $15? I feel like I've put one over on the universe.
