Travelocity

May 26, 2008

I just drove home from Vineyard Haven with a cranky ("Where's my supper?") puppy. Reminded me of long ago school bus rides when we were so obstreperous the driver would pull over and tell us we weren't going anywhere till we SHUT UP. First he wanted my candy bar. Then he wanted the wrapper. Then he wanted the Vineyard Gazette. I put the Gazette in the back of the cab. He climbed over the console to get it. I moved the paper to the front seat. He wanted to climb back into the front but was too tired so he yowled till I boosted his butt with my right hand while driving with my left. Then he wanted to climb into my lap. I pushed him back into his own seat. He yowled some more, then he tried to wrap his teeth around my wrist. I whacked him with my forefinger. He gave me a terrible hurt look and subsided.

Now he's had his supper and is out on the deck doing some power chewing on two squeaky toys and a rawhide.

This morning we hit the laundromat with three washers' worth of laundry, including the dark green flannel sheets and my dearly beloved red fleece robe that are finally ready to be retired for the summer. Summer wash rates had gone into effect since my last trip: $5.50 per machine, up 50¢ from last summer. I'd already heard that the cops were out in force for the holiday weekend; a guy doing his laundry worked for the county bus service, officially the VTA, the Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority. He said that buswise it was the busiest Memorial Day weekend he'd ever seen, and he worked 11 hours yesterday. While the wash washed, Trav and I went for a walk -- behind the laundromat to the tennis center, around to Animal Health Care (closed for veterinary services, but several dogs were out back in the kennels, enjoying the fine weather), and back along the airport access road. People kept stopping their cars to gawk at the puppy, ask what he was (Siberian husky was a common guess -- when Rhodry was a pup, most people were totally flummoxed about what he was, but the northern breeds are more common on the island these days, and most of them are Siberians), and tell me about their puppies, malamutes, or dogs in general.

Travvy seems to have Rhodry's ability to stop traffic. I'm working on his car manners so he won't run me into a tree.
