Message on a Box Spring
July 09, 2008
On the Old Holmes Hole Road, where the left fork leads into the dog park (a modest network of woodland trails named after the late John Rogers) and the right fork, bluestoned, leads uphill and toward the Tisbury town wells, a twin-size box spring leans against a tree, facing the woods. On the tree is written:
she's your boss
I first saw it almost a week ago. This afternoon I rode that way again, to see if it was still there. It was.
There has to be a story here. Who's "she"? Who's "you"? Who wrote the words on the box spring, was it the same person who propped the box spring against the tree, and who was meant to see it? Has this person seen it, and what did he or she think if/when s/he did? How did the writer read the words?
she's your boss
-- suggesting that she's your boss, not mine; you're the one who has to deal with her -- or maybe
she's your boss
-- as opposed to your co-worker, subordinate, wife, daughter, mother, friend, or ex?
Inquiring minds are dying to know. If they don't find out soon, they might have to make something up.
